Optimization on Thrust Ripple of an Axial-Flux Permanent-Magnet Linear Synchronous Machine

Abstract —This paper focuses on decreasing the thrust ripple
of an axial-flux permanent-magnet linear synchronous machine
(PMLSM) used for free-piston Stirling engines. A typical 1kW
machine with 10 poles and 9 slots is investigated. By finiteelement
method (FEM), detent force and thrust ripple are
analyzed for different axial and radial dimensions of the end
stator tooth. Meanwhile, the similar trends of no-load detent
force and load thrust ripple has been found. To verify the
proposed method, prototype machine was manufactured and
tested.

Abstract —The rotor designs of interior permanent magnet
synchronous motors are investigated along with the consideration
of the cross magnetization. The torque of the motor is
decomposed into four components in order to understand the
cross magnetization effect on the torque. The validity of the
calculated results is confirmed by experiments. It is clarified that
the V-type magnet configuration causes significant cross
magnetization effect, which results in the decrease in the torque.
An appropriate magnet configuration is proposed in order to
reduce the cross magnetization effect.

Torque ripple optimization of skewed IPM motor for field weakening operation

Abstract — Since last decade many novel interior permanent
magnets motors’ (IPM) have been developed and introduced in a
mass production. Such design has many advantages comparing to
well known surface motors’ designs; especially it is very robust in
terms of permanent magnet requirements: a simple block shape
and lower quality issue. These factors play very important role
particularly if the costs of neodymium magnet (NdFeB) are
under high price fluctuation. Utilization of the IPM motor for
sensitive application requires a skewing to minimize cogging and
torque ripple. Unfortunately, a skewed IPM motor operates in a
field weakening area causing increase of a torque ripple and a
motor vibration. This phenomenon is caused by the load
dependent reluctance within axial motor’s length. This paper
describes the presented problem and possible solution for an IPM
motor used in automotive area.

The Expanding Role of PM Machines in Direct-Drive Applications

Abstract — It is widely recognized that permanent magnet
(PM) synchronous machines are attractive candidates for directdrive
applications that eliminate gearboxes or other mechanical
transmission components between the machine and the load. But
it raises the question of what is special about PM machines that
makes them such suitable candidates for these applications? The
physical basis of this appealing feature of PM machines is
explored in comparison to induction machines and other familiar
types of ac machines. Several applications are used to highlight
both the strengths and the limitations of PM machines in directdrive
applications, illuminating key engineering tradeoffs that
must be carefully evaluated when developing such designs. The
major impact that direct-drive permanent magnet machines have
already demonstrated in some application areas is highlighted,
providing insight into technology changes that are currently
under way in other fields.

Abstract – The electrical energy consumption continues
growing and more applications relay on electricity. We
can expect that more 60 % of all energy consumption will
be converted and used as electricity. Therefore, it is a
demand that production, distribution and use of electrical
energy are done as efficient as possible. Further, the
recent challenges with nuclear power plants are arguing to
find more sustainable energy generation solutions. Of
many options, two major technologies will play important
roles to solve parts of those future challenges. One is to
change the electrical power production from conventional,
fossil based energy sources to renewable energy sources.
Another is to use high efficient power electronics in power
generation, power transmission/distribution and end-user
application. This paper discus trends of the future grid
infrastructure as well as the most emerging renewable
energy sources, wind energy and photovoltaics. Then main
focus is on the power electronics and control technology
for wind turbines as they are the largest renewable power
contributor, allowing their penetration into a SmartGrid
to be even higher in the future.

Development of Vessel Integrated Power System

Abstract — The Integrated Power System (IPS) is not only an
important basis of the shipbased high-energy weapons but also a
revolutionary way of the developing naval vessel power because it
is characterized by lower noise, higher survivability, fewer prime
movers, less fuel consumption, and greater convenience for
general arrangement. This paper has described both the
constitution and the latest developments of IPS, proposed the
concept of two-generation IPSs, and presented their remarkable
technical characteristics and typical architectures. The
quantitative analyses of volume, weight, efficiency, power supply
continuity, load flow adjustment and control capability, stability,
protection and reconfiguration abilities demonstrate that the
second-generation IPS has the advantage over the firstgeneration
IPS. Finally, several key technologies concerning the
second-generation IPS that need a breakthrough have been
proposed according to the current technical level.

Sensorless Control of AC Motor -
Where are we now?

Abstract — In the AC machine drives, the rotor position
information is the crucial information for high performance drive
system. There have been more than 30 years of researches to get the
rotor position information without explicit position sensors such as
encoders and resolvers. Some research results are commercialized and
applied to industrial field. However, still the performance of
sensorless drive is limited. In this paper, the overview of the sensorless
drive techniques, especially regarding Interior Permanent Magnet
Synchronous Machine (IPMSM), are described. Some research topics
for future study are suggested.
