A practical classification of the motor technology can be made by the principle of operation
and the power class. The classification comprises miniature motors (up to 1 W), smallsized
motors (1 W to 0.75 kW), medium-sized motors (0.75 to 375 kW) and large-sized
motors (> 375 kW). Typical applications for miniature motors are in micro technology or
micro system technology and medical technology. Direct current (DC) motors are often
used due to the limitation of the operation space. Small-sized motors are often used in the
consumer product area, but also as small actuators in cars. For this class, DC motors are
used as well, in addition to asynchronous motors.
