The taught Masters in New and Renewable Energy is available through one year full-time study. The programme consists of four core and three optional modules. The course comprises lectures, assessed assignments, laboratories and computer classes. Programme description
The MSc in Sustainable Energy Systems is an interdisciplinary degree addressing the scientific, engineering and technical aspects of global concerns about the availability of energy sources, sustainability of these sources through exploitation of new technologies or preservation of existing sources, and environmental concerns. The impetus to specialise in this area stems from the large projected increases in global population and energy demand and is underscored by the need for new workable global supplies of affordable sustainable energy. These concerns elevate this energy need as perhaps the greatest single challenge facing the world in the 21st century. The current acute nature of the challenge results from the confluence of concerns about energy supply and demand, security, and the effects of energy production and use on the environment. As a result there is an increasing demand for postgraduates specialising in this field.

This programme will provide you with unique expertise in the fundamentals of energy and the environment. Specialist modules provide knowledge and understanding of existing technologies as well as the ability to contribute to the design and development of new technologies and devices in this field, to develop new technologies to extract energy from diverse energy sources and to use existing and design new energy conversion devices as necessary.

Energy management using sustainable technologies and implementation of environmental initiatives plays a rapidly increasing role in many public organisations and industry. -Electrical Technology for Sustainable and Renewable Energy Systems (MSc)

This course is operated on a modular basis and consists of two semesters during which you will follow a series of taught modules (worth 120 credits), followed by a 60-credit research project undertaken during the summer period.

Modules:
Control Systems
This module enables students to design both analogue and digital controllers for linear single-input single-output systems. Students have access to CAD control design packages for evaluating control design. This module covers:

practical problems in digital control

practice with CAD package.

Energy Conversion for Motor and Generator Drives
This module provides an understanding of how electrical machines and controlled power converters combine to form variable-speed drive systems meeting the need of motive power applications. This module includes:

control techniques and system performance
drive comparison and applications
performance, reliability and cost.
analysis of typical load systems and specifications

Renewable Energy Technology 1
This module will examine the various sources of renewable energy suitable for use in buildings. It will concentrate on wind, water, waste heat, solar, geothermal and bio-mass as potential sources of energy and investigate the contribution they can make to a building's energy requirement, the technology used to harness them and limitations associated with their use.

Renewable Energy Technology 2
This module will examine aspects of performance analysis and system design/sizing of renewable energy systems for building integration. The course provides opportunities to gain experience in issues of technology selection, system design, installation and performance analysis of a range of renewable energy systems. The module will emphasize on solar energy technolgoeis (photovoltaic and solar thermal systrems) and small scale wind turbines.
The course will cover aspects of weather data resource/collection, system performance analysis, system design parameters, design/simulation tools and field evaluation of these technologies.

MSc Project
In this module a student will be assigned to an individual supervisor who will be a staff member in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. The student will carry out a practical or theoretical project chosen from the current interests of the staff member concerned. The student will be expected to conduct a literature survey, undertake practical or theoretical work and write a dissertation on this work.

Power Electronic Design
This module provides students with an understanding of the operational principles of power electronic converters and their associated systems. This module covers:
3-phase naturally commutated ac-dc/dc-ac converters
capacitive and inductive smoothing - device ratings
dc-ac PWM inverters and modulation strategies
resonant converters
high power factor utility interface circuits
thermal management of power devices including transient thermal effects.

Power Networks with Laboratory
This module provides students with an understanding of power system apparatus and their behaviour under normal and fault conditions. It also provides an opportunity to apply CAD techniques to power system problems. This module covers:

Power Quality

Combined Heat and Power Systems
The objective of this module is to examine Combined Heat and Power (CHP) technology inncluding large, mini and small-scale systems. The module will include topics on prime movers technology used in different types of CHP scemes (steam, gas, CCGT, IC, Stirling engine, and Fuel cells) and associated electric generators/alternators, and control devices. Operation and performance of each CHP scheme (large scale CHP, District heating, mini-CHP for large buildings, and micro-CHP for single dwellings) will also be covered. Assessment and performance measurement of a mini-CHP and/or micro-CHP system will be carried out in the form of a mini-project to assess economical viability of such schemes.

Technologies for the Hydrogen Economy
This module considers:

Applications and feasibility assessment

FACTS and Distributed Generation
This module provides students with an understanding of power systems which include renewable energy generators. It investigates the operation of renewable energy generators at a systems level, including analysis of distributed generation systems. The module covers:

operation and control of microgrids
operation of the grid - regulation and contracts
economic optimisation of renewable generators within a power system
distributed power system control and stability
Introduction to protection methods

Technologies for Wind Generation
This module provides students with an understanding of the technologies used in wind power systems. It investigates the operation of wind generators and of wind farms and the current developments in electrical engineering for wind power. The module covers:

analysis of permanent magnet generators
vector control of generators
operation and control of wind farms
economic optimisation of wind generators within a power system
AC-DC transmission links for offshore wind farms

Advanced AC Drives with Project

c)-Sustainable Technology 可再生能源技术
The programme Sustainable Technology is based on the concept of Industrial Ecology with focus on the understanding of interactions between technical, economic, social and ecological systems and processes.
Industrial Ecology can also be considered as a concept for how industry, or rather the entire industrial society of today, will work in the future in order to reduce its interference with the life-supporting ecosystems of the world. Risk Assessment is also a very important area in sustainable development that includes issues such as comparing risks between different energy solutions, communication of risks between different stakeholders etc.
Technology is an important driving force for economic development and technology and communication are two essential factors in the development of more sustainable societies. Without new sustainable technologies, it will not be possible to attain economic growth and global equity. Without communication skills, it will not be possible to reach consensus in the democratic processes in society for different new technologies. These insights will be the foundation in the Master’s programme in Sustainable Technology.
The Sustainable Technology programme is divided into two branches, Environmental Management or Environmental Technology, a choice the students will make in the middle of the programme.

Programme outline
The Master’s programme in Sustainable Technology has a total duration of 2 years, divided in 4 terms. The programme is built up of 3 terms of theoretical courses which amount to 91.5 ECTS credits. Compulsory courses amount to 79.5 ECTS and 12 ECTS are from elective courses.
The study period is followed by an average five to six months of thesis project work (30 ECTS). The programme is open to applicants from all over the world. The programme language is English.
The pedagogical concept applied in the learning process is to work with projects, best practice and case studies, consequently considerable effort is put into training students in discussions, methods for critical analysis and written and oral presentations. It is also high priority to link courses and projects to practical experience through cooperation with companies, institutions and public authorities.

Master in Wind Energy
The Master’s programme in Wind Energy aims primarily at engineers in the mechanical and/or electrical field. The programme is structured as a two-year part-time education so that it is possible to keep up one’s daily work at the same time. It is a modular programme which means that courses and projects can be completed according to the individual student’s needs and interests without being obliged to sign up for the entire programme. After the first semester, one can choose between two specializations within Mechanics or Electronics.

The Purpose of the Master’s Programme in Wind Energy is to Enable the Student to:
  • acquire research based competence in the wind energy area
  • acquire knowledge of fundamental theories and methods used in the wind energy area attain theoretical and practical skills required for wind turbine planning and design develop technical skills relating to the design, analysis, specification and evaluation of complex wind turbine projects.
Contents of the Master’s Programme
On the 1st semester a general introduction to important problems arising in wind energy engineering will be given. The programme has an electrical and a mechanical specialization

Within the mechanical specialization focus is concentrated on the determination of aerodynamic loads on wind turbines, dynamic structural analyses and optimization of wind turbine blades. The students will be able to analyse and dimension wind turbine structures. Special focus will be on structural dynamics, aerodynamics and material-mechanical conditions for wind turbine blades.

The the electro technical specialization primarily focuses on the electrical and controlling aspects of wind turbine technology, i.e. electric machines, effect electronics, control and regulation theory and analysis of the electric coupling to the power supply network. Further, the programme provides knowledge of stability conditions and protection to enable the participants to analyse and dimension the electric components of a wind turbine so that it will be possible to predict its effect on the power supply system.

Courses and project are offered individually for each of the two specializations. However, a number of courses common for both of the specializations are also offered, on the first semesters in particular.

Form of Work
The teaching on each semester consists of four to six seminars of 2-3 days’ duration, distance education, self study and project work in groups. If a student has no need – or time – for the whole Master’s programme, it is possible to attend individual courses.

In the spring of 2010, the following courses are offered at the 1st semester.:

个人感觉丹麦的Technical University of Denmark (DTU)和瑞典的KTH - Royal Institute of Technology的课程设置更趋于专业化(适合职前教育), UK院校的课程设置更体现通识教育

MSc in Wind Energy    -Technical University of Denmark
Study Plan  
The aim of the MSc programme in Wind Energy is to give you a general understanding of wind energy and a deep insight and knowledge in technologies related to wind power production which qualifies you to analyse, design, develop, and operate wind energy systems.

The programme in Wind Energy is characterized by the following:   
·        The education covers the broad range of technologies involved in wind power.
·        All courses are taught on an advanced technical level, in English.
·        The teaching is based upon and integrated with world-leading research in wind energy.
A high degree of freedom is given in the choice of focus to allow establishment of an individual academic profile.

The wind energy industry, Risø DTU and others are actively involved in the master programme. External partners take active part in the teaching. The Masters thesis often involves an active cooperation with one or more external partners.


Program Provisions
To obtain the MSc degree in Wind Energy, the student must fulfill the following requirements:   
·        Have passed General Competence Courses adding up to 30 ECTS points
·        Have passed Technological Specialization Courses adding up to at least 30 points
·        Have performed a Master Thesis of at least 30 points within Wind Energy.
·        Have passed a sufficient number of Elective Courses from the list to bring the total number of ECTS points of the entire study to 120.

Course 41313 Wind Turbine Technology and Aerodynamics is mandatory in the beginning of the programme. The course gives a broad understanding of wind energy technology and is essential for a deeper understanding of wind turbines needed in succeeding courses.
