the members of the 2012 fictional 15, our ranking of the wealthiest fictional characters, are cumulatively worth $209.5 billion. that’s a lot of money –but it pales in comparison to the wealth of their non-imaginary counterparts. the fifteen richest real world billionaires are worth $519.6 billion.
when we calculate the net worth of each fictional character, we base our calculations on real world commodity and stock prices. for instance, to value the gold possessed by the dragon smaug, we did the math to determine how many ounces of gold filled his hoard,jordan shoes on sale, and multiplied that by the metal’s current price. when we valued defense contractor tony stark,retro jordan shoes, we looked at comparable real businesses, analyzed their stock movement, and applied the same changes to stark’s net worth.
since we’re making so much effort to create “real world” valuations for fictional characters, we wondered how they would? stack up against real billionaires. the results are a little surprising.
our #1 fictional billionaire, smaug, has so much money he sleeps on a giant pile of jewels and gold. but he’s still a second-class serpent compared to the #1 real billionaire, carlos slim helu. slim is worth $69 billion, 10% more than smaug. in fact, only three of our fictional richest –smaug,air jordans cheap, flintheart glomgold and carlisle cullen– would even break the real-world’s top fifty.
the billionaires who rank near the bottom of our fictional 15,jordan fusion 5, like springfield nuclear power plant owner c. montgomery burns, fare even worse. when ranked amongst the real world’s wealthiest, monty comes in all the way down at #972.
the lesson here? real world billionaires are so incredibly rich it’s hard to imagine.
in the following table i have merged the members of the fictional 15 into forbes’ most recent ranking of the world’s billionaires, published in march. because there are over 1200 real-world billionaires, i’ve truncated the list and left just enough for context.
